![]() ![]() While a Ford Focus is said to be one of the most economic cars in the world, few reviewers mention how heavy the car frame actually is. Upon driving out of the petrol kiosk, I immediately feel the difference – the vehicle surges forward with power even with a light tap on the accelerator. But was the improvement significant enough to justify a 20% increase in price? They lasted some two tank fulls of petrol before I switched back to my regular petrol to see if the difference was real or imagined. We were given some vouchers to put Shell V-Power Nitro+ to the test. It goes without saying that such a premium-priced petrol would imply ( see other post here on the features of Shell V-Power Nitro+) improved engine performance. ![]() That’s my Ford Focus, getting its fix of V-Power Nitro+. (HSBC cardholders get an instant 16 per cent discount until Dec 31, 2015.) I get 10% discount thanks to my Shell Escape card, but I still shell out at least a significant 20% more than for my regular Esso 5000. On Sep 18, the pump price of Shell V-Power Nitro Plus was $2.71/L and on Sep 27, because of an F1-related promotion, it was $2.40/L. Reasons being 1) my 14% credit card discount with the OCBC Plus! and the fact that 2) there’s an Esso station at my doorstep. We’ve been using Esso 5000 since we got this car two years ago. Therefore, our car is very much like any other car in Singapore – it is no stranger to start-stop traffic or the expressways. Our average daily mileage is about 30 to 50 km, seeing that we live near the core city central, but we sometimes also need to drive further for excursions on weekends, to visit Asher’s other grandma, or to army camp (that’s Alvin). I’m usually the driver, chauffeuring my pre-schooler to and fro school, to his grandma’s place, to playdates, making grocery runs and going for meetings. And I definitely needed more power in my set of wheels. Just to give you some background: Our family car is a 2007 Ford Focus five-door hatchback (1.6L). ![]()
